That's why the Canberra Raiders are on high alert for a Sea Eagles ambush when they play against Manly on Sunday in a blockbuster showdown.
The Raiders have been one of the hottest teams in the NRL in recent weeks, but Manly has been quietly going about its business away from the hype.
Cherry-Evans has been thriving out of the spotlight as Tom and Jake Trbojevic take centre stage on and off the field.
But Queenslander Papalii knows it's Cherry-Evans who has galvanised Manly for their unexpected run this year.
"I really fancy him as a captain. What he did away from the field in Origin reminded me of Cameron Smith," Papalii said.

"Everytime he spoke, everyone listened. He's back in form now and it's good to see.
"He's found his feet again after injuries earlier this year, he sacrificed a lot to get back to that Origin team. Knowing him on a personal level, he's a wonderful captain and one we've got to watch."
Manly has won four of the past five games against the Raiders, but Canberra snatched a golden-point win in the clash in the capital last year.
Manly slipped to fifth on the ladder, but can jump ahead of South Sydney if they beat the Raiders.
