More than 80 bush and grass fires were burning in NSW on Monday morning, including the huge Gospers Mountain/Grose Valley blaze northwest of Sydney, the Green Wattle Creek fire southwest of the city, and the Currowan bushfire on the South Coast.
WHAT IS THE DEATH TOLL?
The death toll rose from six to eight on Thursday night when two volunteer firefighters were killed after a tree fell on their RFS tanker near Buxton, southwest of Sydney.
Geoffrey Keaton, 32, and 36-year-old Andrew O'Dwyer had been helping to battle the Green Wattle Creek blaze.
HOW MANY HOMES HAVE BEEN LOST?
More than 800 homes have been lost this fire season and NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons on Sunday expressed fears that another 100 buildings had been destroyed.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian has said "there's not much left" in the small town of Balmoral, southwest of Sydney.
THE WARNINGS
A seven-day state of emergency was declared on Thursday.
Monday's fire danger rating is high in 10 regions, including the far west, New England, the Illawarra/Shoalhaven and the far south coast. There's a very high fire danger in the ACT, Monaro alpine, southern slopes, northern slopes and southern ranges regions.
FORECAST
Mr Fitzsimmons says more favourable conditions are expected until the end of the week when temperatures rise again and northerly winds begin influencing fire behaviour into next week.
