The Hume Highway near Gundagai has reopened after an emergency warning issued for the nearby Dunns Road bushfire forced the road to close.
The highway was closed about 10pm Friday in both directions between Muttama Road near Coolac and the Sturt Highway near Tarcutta.
On Saturday morning, the Hume Highway is open however many roads south of the highway remain closed.
The out-of-control Dunns Road bushfire, which has burnt more than 300,000 hectares, was upgraded to emergency warning level on Friday night.
On Saturday morning, the fire was downgraded to advice level.
Strong winds were causing the fires to spread in multiple directions and a southerly change was moving across the area, causing erratic fire behaviour, the NSW Rural Fire Service said.
Fire is burning south of the Hume Highway and spreading quickly in Mt Adrah, Tumblong, Grahamstown and Adelong areas. The RFS said spot fires were starting ahead of the main fire front.
People in the area of Gundagai and Goobarraganda should be alert to smoke and embers.
