Wallabies coach Dave Rennie has named O'Connor to return from a knee injury in the No. 10 jersey, with Hodge moving to fullback for a clash with Argentina at Western Sydney Stadium on Saturday.
Hodge's retention in the starting XV pushes Tom Banks to the bench, while Noah Lolesio has fallen out of the match day 23 with his Super Rugby teammate Irae Simone earning a recall on the pine.
Hodge will have played in every position in the Wallabies back line barring scrumhalf come the opening whistle on Saturday night.
"It's great to have James back in the team this weekend, he brings a lot of experience to a young group and has been working really hard to get his body right to be able to get back on the field," Rennie said.
"Reece has done a great job for us at number 10 over the past two games and we're confident he'll put in another good performance for us on Saturday night from fullback.
"The side has worked really hard over the last 10 weeks or so and built a strong connection and I know as a full squad we are really keen to put together a performance that reflects that."
The All Blacks already have one hand and four fingers on the Tri Nations trophy, with the Wallabies needing to beat the Pumas by 101 points to steal the silverware.
