That's why the Canberra Royals coach will leave the club at the end of the John I Dent Cup campaign with five premiership medals - one at Queanbeyan and four at Royals - in tow.
Adding another title to the legacy is beyond Southwell this season with Royals anchored to the bottom of the standings in search of their first win of the year.
But the three-time ACTRU coach of the year is still determined to go out with a bang, and the next checkpoint comes when Royals host the Gungahlin Eagles at Phillip Oval on Saturday afternoon.
"It's one of those passions that can keep rolling on, but it's probably time to do a few other things," former Canberra representative coach Southwell said.

"I've been doing it a long time, so I made the decision about this time last year, it's just something that feels right at the moment.
"It's been really enjoyable for me and its certainly something I will miss. I've never not wanted to go to training or not be around no matter what the circumstances. So, I think that's a testament to the character of the players and certainly that group as well.
"All of the grand final wins are obviously highlights and certainly the people involved in those. There's a great coaching team involved in that, and I've certainly enjoyed their company and their input and work ethic, and certainly the leadership and the players."
The retiring Royal dismissed any ideas for jumping straight back into another coaching role, insisting he didn't have any coaching aspirations in for the near future.
"I had them many years ago, but I think it's time to do a bit of traveling and just sit back and enjoy life," Southwell said.
Meanwhile, the Queanbeyan Whites will look to keep their finals hopes alive against the Uni-Norths Owls at Campese Field.
Back across the border, the Wests Lions look to find some breathing space in the top four when they meet the Tuggeranong Vikings at Viking Park, with all games kicking off at 3.05pm.
