In a statement, ACT Policing said that about 1.10am today, they received reports of a suspicious person on Holman Street looking into parked cars and trying car handles.

Police attended and noticed a number of cars with doors open and that property was strewn both inside and outside of the vehicles.

Officers then identified more vehicles with doors open on Macalister Crescent and found the 16-year-old accused in the area.

"While speaking with police, the teenager removed a number of items from his pockets, including cash, a watch, a dash camera and various tools," police alleged.

The teenager was arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House.

He was charged with unlawful possession of stolen property and going equipped for theft.

Police said further charges were expected to be laid.

The teenager was granted watch house bail and will face court at a later date.

ACT Policing Detective Inspector Simon Coady said up to 15 cars were targeted that were not locked and secured.

"We're all spending a lot more time at home but it's still important to lock your car even if you're only gone for a few seconds," Detective Inspector Coady said.

"Of course, remove any valuables that may encourage this opportunistic crime."
