But before her intriguing work goes up in the gallery's Sculpture Garden, she will the subject of a major exhibition at Canberra Museum and Gallery.
CMAG is hosting a touring exhibition of Lindy Lee's work from the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.
Lindy Lee: Moon in a Dew Drop, will open at CMAG on September 17, 2022.
Curated by former MCA director Elizabeth Ann Macgregor, it's the largest survey exhibition of Lee's works to date.
CMAG director Sarah Schmidt said the show was significant for Canberra, given the NGA's commission.
"With the National Gallery of Australia having announced the major commission of Ouroboros by Lindy Lee for the 40th anniversary of its sculpture garden, this is a very timely exhibition for Canberra," she said.
Ouroboros, a $14 million, 13-tonne stainless steel sculpture, will be installed in 2024.
But art lovers can see earlier examples of Lee's work from the 1980s to the present, including several new works created specifically for the exhibition tour.
Lee works across painting, sculpture, installation and public art. She draws on her Australian and Chinese heritage to develop works that engage with the history of art, cultural authenticity, personal identity and the cosmos. Key influences are the philosophies of Daoism and Ch'an (Zen) Buddhism.
