Double demerit penalties will be in force across NSW from Friday as part of the annual June long-weekend road safety crackdown conducted by NSW Police.

The double demerit period will run until 11.59pm on Monday, June 13.
Heightened penalties will apply for speeding, using a mobile phone while behind the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt and riding without a motorcycle helmet.
Double demerit periods take place around public holidays including Easter, Anzac Day and the Christmas period and were introduced in 1997 in NSW.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden said he was reaching out to communities across the state to look after themselves and their families this long weekend.
"We have a bumper snow season and there is a lot of people travelling on the roads. Double deremits are in place this weekend to ensure people are acutely aware of the dangers of travelling when there are large numbers of people on the road," he said.
"It's very important we understand the decisions we make when we're on the roads are critical for our own safety and other road users."
