The hype around the 'Tillies' led to 11.15 million people tuning in to watch a historic clash at Sydney's Stadium Australia on August 16.
The 3-1 loss had a national average audience on Channel 7 and 7plus of 7.13 million, making it the most watched program since OzTAM's audience measurement system began in 2001.
With 957,000 viewers on 7plus the game also smashed the record for the most streamed event ever in Australia.
The record viewership also doesn't include another sell-out crowd of more than 75,000 at Stadium Australia and the thousands more that packed into live sites and venues across the country.
In Melbourne, Federation Square reached its capacity of 10,000 about an hour before kick-off, with hordes of people breaking down barriers to enter the site despite the efforts of police.
"Australia was captivated last night as the Matildas played their hearts out and did us all proud," Seven Melbourne managing director Lewis Martin said.
"Although their FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 journey ended last night, the Matildas have re-written the history books and captured the hearts and minds of the nation with a performance that is sure to inspire generations of Australians for many years to come."

The coverage of the Women's World Cup has so far reached 14.04 million people on Channel 7 with another 3.4 million tuning in online.
The Matildas' tournament isn't over yet with the side to play off for third place against Sweden at 6pm AEST on August 19 in Brisbane.
The World Cup final between England and Spain kicks off at 8pm on August 20 in Sydney.
