As part of the Design Canberra Festival, Parliament House will host the Geometry of Democracy tours, designed to take visitors behind-the-scenes to get up close and personal with the iconic building’s design.
Many of these areas are not usually accessible to the public, including sections that illustrate architect Romaldo Giurgola’s vision for the People’s House – a vision that complemented the path taken by the original designers of the nation’s capital, Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin.
For the Griffins, it was all about the use of geometric shapes – circles, squares and triangles – and the use of geographical landmarks.
The Geometry of Democracy Tour is designed to show visitors areas that best demonstrate the level of geometric design – from the Marble Foyer, which recognises our early need to build large spaces where people can meet, to the two 460 metre-long curved walls that frame the building.
