Brett James Cook, 52, did not apply for bail and did not enter pleas when he appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday on seven charges of obtaining a financial advantage by deception.

The court heard the alleged offences had been committed between September 2016 and August 2017.

No further evidence was put before the court and Cook was remanded in custody to reappear later this month.

An ACT Policing press release, published on Friday morning, said Cook had been arrested after a raid on Thursday.

The police statement alleged Cook developed trust with his victim, a Canberra woman, after offering to paint street numbers on the driveway of the her house.

Police alleged he told his victim of fictitious health difficulties of his children, and himself, and their requirement for ongoing medical care.

Between September 2016 and August 2017 the woman allegedly gave the man almost $100,000.

Police said there had been similar recent reports of elderly and vulnerable people paying hundreds of dollars for street number painting and other basic housework throughout the ACT.

Police said it would conduct further enquiries into the matters, but urged people to exercise care and caution with people who make unsolicited offers for similar services.
