ACT Policing will have a strong presence in the city for New Year's Eve celebrations targeting anti-social behaviour and drink driving.

While Melbourne and Sydney will see heightened security - including police with high powered weapons - to protect residents from potential attacks, ACT Police said revellers should feel confident Canberra is a safe city.
Superintendent Corey Heldon said ACT Policing members would be particularly visible in Civic helping make sure everyone can enjoy the celebrations.
"We want it to be a safe experience for everybody who chooses to go out," she said.
"We want to make sure everyone who chooses to enjoy the fireworks and the festivities has a good time and they're not witness to or interact with people who decide to behave badly."
Police will also be on the look out for underage drinking, urging parents to take responsibility for their children.
"They should know where they are and with whom," Superintendent Heldon said.
"They need to know what their children are up to - no one wants that surprise at 3 o'clock in the morning of the police ringing to tell them their children are somewhere they didn't know where they were."
While Melbourne and Sydney have visible increased security, Superintendent Heldon said ACT Policing said it had monitored the environment and made an appropriate security plan.
"The ACT community can be confident that we've got the right people in the right places," she said.
"We're very active in our planning particularly with the event organisers.
"We've evaluated the risk and we encourage people to come out and enjoy the festivities.
"Canberra is a safe place and we will ensure we try to make the festivities as safe as possible."
Superintendent Heldon said drink and drug driving would be a priority for police.
She urged people to be mindful of the already high national road toll for the holiday period.
"It's really important people plan ahead and don't consider drink driving," Superintendent Heldon said.
"I doesn't just affect you it affects other road users.
"We're very fortunate we haven't had any fatalities [in the ACT this holiday period] and we don't want to."
