"It's all about choosing the right home for the dog," she said.

"It's really important with a dog to know if they're suitable at home with a family or with other pets or large spaces."

As president of ACT Rescue and Foster, Ms Parsons has helped to do just that for countless dogs abandoned or sitting in pounds with an uncertain future across the capital.

On Saturday, the organisation celebrated rehoming its 3000th dog, an honour shared between two pooches, who were adopted at the same time by different families.

Jake, an eight-month-old German shepherd cross labrador, and Nala, a nine-year-old kelpie, were the guests of honour at a party in Yarralumla to mark the milestone.

Alex Chow, who recently adopted Jake with his partner Natalie Tegtman, said it was the first time he had owned a rescue dog and he had loved every bit of it.

"We had been thinking of doing this for a while," Mr Chow said.

"It would be nice to get a new puppy, but there's so many dogs out there without a home, and it's nice to give them a home."

Victoria Jong also adopted the 3000th dog from ACT Rescue and Foster, and said Nala had been very easy going.

"The first time we met it was a bit hit and miss, and it flowed from there and the match seemed right," Ms Jong said.

"She's just really relaxed and pretty chilled. Although she's impatient with other dogs sometimes, she loves her squeaky toys."

ACT Rescue and Foster's president said rehoming 3000 dogs had been a major achievement for an organisation which has had such humble begins.

The foster group began in 2001 as a stall at a Canberra fete, with cards showing dogs that were eligible for adoption.

Since then, it has grown into a full-time commitment for many, with more than 40 support staff volunteering as foster carers for the dogs until their new home is found.

"Every week we have behavioural assessors go to pounds in Queanbeyan, Canberra, Yass and Goulburn, seeing which dogs are nearing the end of their time in the pound and would be suited to foster care," Ms Parsons said.

"We take them out of the pound and vaccinate and desex the dogs and then put their details up on a website for people searching for a dog."

Ms Parsons said she was proud of the organisation's growth over the years.

"It's amazing to see, and we're celebrating all the dogs we have rehomed."

Jake's owner said adopting a rescue dog had been rewarding.

"It's nice to have dog when you come home and he's always there and excited to see you," Mr Chow said.
