The 11-year-old was riding along Vintage Road at Thornlands after leaving a skate park when he came towards a man walking a dog about 5pm.
As the man and dog approached, the dog bit the boy on his right upper thigh.
The boy's friends rushed to help but police later said the man appeared to downplay the severity of the dog bite.
The man then walked off with his dog towards Crystal Waters shops.
The boy was taken to Lady Cilento Children's Hospital with puncture wounds.
Police are searching for the man, who was described as being in his late 50s, Caucasian with a proportionate build and grey balding hair with grey stubble.
He was wearing a light grey jumper and black pants.
The dog was described as being similar to a bullmastiff but more the size of a Doberman, with brown fur. The dog was wearing a black studded collar.
Anyone who saw the attack or knows the man or his dog was urged to contact police.
