Brisbane’s parking permit system has changed with the progressive roll-out of a new scheme across 21 areas of the city to be completed by May 2019.

The current paper parking-permit scheme has gone digital as part of the overhaul of the 22-year-old Regulated Parking Permit Amending Local Law.
The new digital scheme will be rolled out over five stages, and residents will have six weeks to apply for the new scheme once notified.
The scheme, approved by Brisbane City Council in June, includes new permits for carers and health professionals, as well as fleet and car-share permits.
The new scheme went live on Monday for the parking-permit areas of Wilston, Windsor, Sunnybank, Robertson-Macgregor, West End, Highgate Hill, Buranda, Holland Park West and Red Hill.
About 30 residents signed up for the digital permit on the first day.
Under the paper scheme, close to 14,000 residents held 35,000 parking permits across the 21 dedicated controlled parking areas around the inner city, sporting stadiums and major events venues.
The council’s infrastructure chairman, Amanda Cooper, said the digital system would enhance the permit application and renewal process, offering smoother and faster service for residents.
“From this week, new permit requests will also be able to be requested on the new digital portal, which is accessible via council’s website,” she said.
“A range of new permits will also be offered once the system is fully implemented, including carers, health and community, vessel occupier, fleet and car-share permits, as well as two categories of short-term permits to make it easier for tradies to carry out home repairs and renovations.”
Under the scheme permits no longer needed to be displayed on a vehicle dashboard, but if any residents would prefer paper visitor permits they could request them.
The council's parking enforcement officers would use a vehicle's number plate to check its permits.
In February 2019, the parking-permit areas of Ballymore, Herston, Auchenflower and Lang Park would be implemented followed by The Gabba, St Lucia and Taringa in March.
The scheme would extend to Teneriffe, New Farm-Teneriffe Hill and Dutton Park in April and finish with the Queensland Tennis Centre and Brisbane Central in May.
