Using the water to irrigate the dry grounds of Commonwealth Park has been one of the ways Floriade gives life to its colourful flower beds year after year.

"This system has worked really well for us over the past decade. We haven't exceeded our contracted allowance of water from the lake," Event ACT's group manager for event delivery, Ross Triffitt said.

The National Capital Authority has a system of in-ground sprinklers at Commonwealth Park drawing water from the lake and the majority of these operate during Floriade.

The event organisers are licensed to source 15 megalitres of water from the lake a year. This ensures the flower beds are properly cared for.

Throughout this time, rigorous soil tests are carried out to ensure the flowers are ready for opening day.

"We've had fabulous weather conditions over the past few weeks. It has been pretty dry, but the lake water irrigation have been more than sufficient," he said.

"Plus we've had the benefit of some bouts of natural rain, and the sun has been out."

Triffitt said some of the most spectacular blooms - "the hero flowers" - are at Fairygate, which can be found at the lower end of the Floriade site. These are planted the earliest and have benefited from a few more weeks of being exposed to the elements.

While Floriade has more than one million bulbs this year, Triffitt believes the Nightfest attractions will be a major drawcard.

"We've got many different themes for Nightfest this year. There's moviefest on one night, then comedyfest and musicfest one the other nights.

"We'll also be showcasing the local industry in terms of food, wine, beer and spirits. We've partnered with Pialligo Estate, Contentious Character, Underground Spirits and Capital Brewing Co to ensure showcasing local produce at Australia's largest spring festival."
