Transport and Main Roads data reveals 319,625 driver's licences were replaced after being lost, while 82,456 were reported lost in the mail.

Another 92,090 asked for a replacement driver's licence after their card was stolen.

Griffith University cyber security expert Jacqueline Drew said driver's licences were a valuable source of personal information for identity thieves.

"Things like your full name, address - those are the pieces of information that are put together by identity thieves in order to steal someone's identity," she said.

Dr Drew said some criminals used the identity information themselves, while others sold it on the dark web, with frausters often seeking financial gain.

"So opening bank accounts, loans in your name, maybe the registering of vehicles," she said.

Dr Drew said it could take some time until people discovered their information had been used for nefarious purposes, and it was often difficult for victims to take back control.

She recommended people request an annual report from credit agencies and contact IDCARE if they believed they had fallen victim to identity theft.

A Transport and Main Roads spokeswoman said with all lost or stolen identity documents, there was a risk the information could be used in identity theft.

She said a range of security features on Queensland driver's licences included software to measure key key facial features and compare the photo with others held by the department, a computer chip to store information, holograms and special inks, and digital photos and digitised signatures securely stored by the department.

There were 11 new adult proof of age cards issued with the person's gender removed, all in 2017 and 2018.

The gender indicator was removed from Queensland driver's licences and proof of ages cards on October 1, 2016.

The spokeswoman said the adjustment was made following changes to the Commonwealth Sex Discrimination Act in 1984 in 2013, providing protection against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex status.

All other states and territories have either never displayed gender on driver's licences, or removed them more than 10 years ago.

Customers with smartcards issued before October 2016 can request to replace their card with the gender indicator removed.

There were 2389 new smart cards - including driver's licences, proof of age and marine licences - issued because the facial image was not a true likeness, while 3817 people received a new driver's licence when they transitioned off the old laminate licences.

People may request a new licence when their image no longer represents their appearance after cosmetic surgery, tattoo removal and change of hair colour or style.
