The question of whether new cars sold in Australia should be fitted with mandatory vehicle immobilisers will be on the national agenda next week, under a Queensland push for action to prevent tragic outcomes resulting from police pursuits.

It comes after Constable Peter McAulay, 24, was seriously injured after placing tyre spikes on a road to stop a car in Ipswich.
A 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl have been charged with attempted murder and unlawful use of a motor vehicle over the incident.
Police Minister Mark Ryan has placed remote vehicle immobilisers on the agenda at next week's meeting of national police ministers, who will be asked to look at setting up a task force to consider the issue.
"It could be as simple as changing the Australian standard in respect of the escalation of these devices when it comes to new vehicles," Mr Ryan said.
"How do we support the progress of this particular technology being made an Australian standard or being implemented in Australia in some other way?"
On the question of potential concerns from civil liberties groups about people's cars being able to be remotely-controlled, Mr Ryan said it came down to safety.
"Of course there'll be conversations around how this technology might work and how you might manage privacy considerations but that's why we need to start the conversation," he said.
Current national laws require new cars to be fitted with seatbelts and ABS brakes.
For the past six years, Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers has been campaigning for remote immobilisers to be fitted in new cars to allow police to remotely shut down the engines of vehicles involved in pursuits.
Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said the technology could be used to shut down - or slow down - speeding cars without officers even being on the scene.
"The premise is that you can actually have a car that's fleeing, or been seen speeding, and it might not take a police officer to be there, you could find this through CCTV, you could see on your traffic cameras that line our highways today," he said.
However, questioned over whether remotely halting cars in traffic could actually cause crashes, Mr Ryan said experience in the US showed there were different ways the technology could be used.
Under some guidelines, remote immobilisers were not to be activated unless police were nearby.
"It can stop the car straight away or it can cause the car to lose power and slow down," Mr Ryan said.
"In the United States they have some clear processes around when and how the technology is used."
Asked how much immobilisers would cost, Mr Stewart said people needed to think about "what is the cost of a human life?"
"And what is the cost of someone who's been badly injured and takes up bed space in our hospitals for many months and rehabilitation? It's a huge cost," he said.
Mr Stewart said if remote immobilisers became the national standard, the unit cost would fall dramatically for manufacturers.
