A man has been stabbed by a poisonous stingray barb while walking in shallow water in central Queensland.

The man was walking in shallow water on Sunday at Great Keppel Island with his young son when he accidentally came in contact with a stingray and was attacked.
The RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service was was tasked to the scene just after noon on Sunday.
The patient was treated and stabilised on the scene by the on board Queensland Ambulance Service flight paramedic before being airlifted to Rockhampton Hospital for further treatment.
Stingrays are not usually aggressive and tend to only attack humans when provoked, such as if they are accidentally stepped on.
Injuries are very painful although rarely life-threatening unless the barb pierces a vital area.
