The ACT government's annual survey of Dickson pool users includes, for the first time, questions on a possible redevelopment of the Cowper Street centre.

The survey asks respondents how they would like to see the centre "evolve" in the next decade, including options for it to remain a "completely outdoor, summer-only pool", be converted into a "year-round indoor facility" or redeveloped as a "combined indoor/outdoor facility".

Flanked by grass and trees, the centre's 50-metre pool and two wading pools are a cherished summer destination for inner north residents, and any suggestion it could be redeveloped would likely spark a backlash from swimmers.

An ACT government spokeswoman said it had no plans to "remove or significantly alter" the Dickson pool, and the question over its future was added to the survey at the request of centre management.

Taryn Langon, speaking on behalf of Dickson Aquatic Centre management, said it wanted to canvass the community's views to ensure it was best placed to meet its expectations in the coming years.

Ms Langon said the pool was widely viewed as an "outdoor oasis", and therefore expected the community would strongly oppose any move to have it replaced with an indoor facility.

But she predicted some residents would support an indoor centre alongside the existing pools, which would allow locals to swim year round.

Any decision on the future of the pool rests with the owner of the pool, the ACT government.

Dickson Residents' Group convener Jane Goffman welcomed a discussion about the future of Dickson pool, which she described as a "one in a million" asset.

Ms Goffman said there would be community support for a year-round swimming centre, but not if it came at the expense of the existing seven-lane outdoor pool.

"It [the community] adores it," Ms Goffman said.

"You have people who grew up at the pool and they have taken their children and their grandchildren there. It is such a wonderful asset for the community."

The government spokeswoman said while the government had no plans to redevelop the pool, it was considering upgrades to the centre's forecourt and carpark as part of a wider rejuvenation of Section 72.

The government has announced the site will accommodate its second Common Ground low-cost housing precinct, although it has yet to unveil its final plans for the urban renewal project.

The North Canberra Community Council has called for the precinct to be retained for community use amid fears it could be dominated by "bulky" apartment blocks.

The survey is available online and closes on January 31.
