A new eight-mile long road from Bilpin across Bowens Creek to Mt Irvine was to be opened by the Minister for Labour, Mr Dunningham. Beginning at a point 22 miles west of Richmond, the road was built across Bowen's Creek valley, shortening the route from Kurrajong to Mt Irvine by 18 miles. Work on the road was begun in August, 1933 by unemployed relief gangs. A sum of £20,000 was expended on labour and materials.
Sheep poisoned by blue couch grass
Four flocks of travelling sheep suffered losses last December, reaching as high as 80 head, at a place on the Moree-Biniguy road. The cause of mortality was proved to be poisoning due to the sheep eating blue couch grass that grew across the main Moree-Gravesend stock route about a mile beyond the Pallamallawa turn-off. All drovers were warned to keep their sheep moving while passing over the area between the 18-mile and 20-mile pegs on this route.
Historic railway coach wrecked by Nazis
The historic Pullman car used on Continental journeys by King Edward and King George were purchased at auction in Calais in 1926 by Herr Wols, a Jewish director of railway and engineering works at Dillingen. A correspondent from Saarbrucken reported that Herr Wols, described as an anti-Hitlerite, had recently dismissed a number of workmen and that in revenge Nazis raided his premises and smashed King Edward’s luxuriously appointed coach.
