His former teacher, David Kisun, 73, was on Friday sentenced to a more than two year suspended jail term for molesting the the man and his brother when they were primary school pupils in the 1980s.

An ACT Supreme Court jury last month found Kisun guilty of four counts of indecent assault, which included putting his hands inside the boys pants and fondling their genitals. Kisun was acquitted of a fifth count.

Kisun faced trial on similar offences last year, where jurors acquitted Kisun on one count but had been unable to come to a decision on two counts on the indictment.

The recent trial included two of those allegations, plus three fresh indictments after new victims came forward.

Kisun appeared for sentence before Justice David Mossop on Friday morning.

The victim, via a victim impact statement, told the court of his struggles with self-worth and self-esteem since the abuse, which had left him feeling humiliated and inadequate.

The court heard the man struggled to trust others, kept acquaintances at arms length, and suffered such crippling anxiety that he often struggled to get out of bed.

He said he had suffered recurring nightmares for the past 30 years.

The defence submitted that Kisun – now aged in his 70s and in ill health – posed little risk of reoffending.

The court heard Kisun had been depleted physically, pyschologically, and financially as a result of the criminal proceedings.

The defence argued Kisun had rehabilitated himself in the passage of time since the offences, and tendered evidence of his contribution to the community, including sending computers to schools in India.

Justice David Mossop, in handing down sentence, said Kisun had exploited his position of authority as the victim’s teacher for his own sexual gratification.

"[It was a] gross abuse of trust," the judge said.

Justice Mossop sentence Kisun to two years and four months jail, to be fully suspended upon entering a three-and-a-half year good behaviour order.
