This exhibition by Nyx Mathews, now on at ANCA Gallery, questions the material, atmospheric and experiential qualities of the artificial landscapes and interior spaces in which we are inevitably immersed, and investigates the tensions inherent in our bodily disruptions of them. Mathews graduated from the Gold and Silversmithing department at the ANU SoAD and creates small sculptural works out of a variety of materials including plaster, glass, brass, nickel and soap. Through speculative, materially ambiguous, often slightly unsteady objects, 2017 ANCA EASS Award recipient Mathews examines the interaction of anthropogenic environments and human beings. The exhibition continues until October 21.
Emerging artist Jude Cirillo's exhibition is a celebration of spring and all things new. The artist says that in creating the work for the exhibition she has researched and experimented with less traditional methods of image making. Her art training was in printmaking and she recently set up her own studio where she has adapted her printing techniques to incorporate the use of a dye cutting machine as an unconventional printing press. The exhibition is on from October 18 to November 11 at Strathnairn Gallery and will be opened by Canberra artist/printmaker Jo Hollier on Sunday, October 21 at 2pm.
Brenton McGeachie and Martin Paull's joint exhibition at M16 opens on Thursday at 6pm and continues until November 4. It includes Paull's Welcome to Canberra. Paull says, "It is sort of an imaginary Canberra. I love that effect you get when the moon shines behind clouds. The view point is from Mt Ainslie, the sky is reflecting off the lake."
A start-up gallery in Queanbeyan is showing unseen works by the late master painter Richard Larter in Cross Pollination at The Queanbeyan Hive. The six pieces will be shown for one weekend only in the opening exhibition for the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council’s annual Artists Trail on October 20 and 21. The six works will be displayed at the new gallery free and unlike the other works at The Hive, the Larters will not be for sale. They were given as gifts to the owners by the painter himself. The Hive is at 274 Crawford Street, Queanbeyan. More information: Simon Ferguson on 0423 025 690.
