It seems the winning combination for a photo in Canberra is to feature the Telstra tower, perhaps add in some good cloud or fog, and throw in a balloon for good measure. Visit Canberra has announced their top 10 most liked photos on Instagram for 2017, and those three elements are the recurring themes.
The Instagram page is made up of user-generated photos using #visitcanberra, then carefully selected by the Visit Canberra team. Instagram user @wanderlust73 managed to get three photos in the top 10, and our own Canberra Times senior photographer Karleen Minney even made the list.
So here they are, Visit Canberra's top 10 most liked Instagram posts for 2017.
1. Mount Ainslie lookout by @robmulally (2,494 likes)
It was an out-of-towner who captured the most-liked pic for the year. Rob Mulally (@robmulally) said this of his October 28 shot: "On the last morning in Canberra we decided to head to Mt Ainslie, a place I have visited before and just wanted to enjoy a relaxing sunrise over the city, I declined the invitation to walk up from behind the war memorial and decided to drive up past more kangaroos than i've seen in a long time...
"As [I] was sitting up there waiting for the light and watching a balloon skillfully navigate over the city, I noticed the calmness. There is a cool fresh air that comes in off the nearby mountains. Its pretty amazing to me that our Capital City blends in so well with its surroundings."
2. Autumn Telstra Tower by @dkolsky (2,231 likes)
Darrel Kolsky (@dkolsky) took this photo in May when the Telstra Tower celebrated its 37th birthday, and also managed to capture the beautiful autumn colours, plus a cheeky ACTION bus hiding in the middle.
3. Foggy Telstra Tower at dawn by @wanderlust73 (2,106 likes)
Another Telstra Tower, this time set amongst some stunning fog. Vishal Pandey (@wanderlust73) is a big fan of capturing the Canberra icon, and he posted this photo in April.
4. Same Sex Marriage announcement at Australian Parliament House by @barrochford (2,091 likes)
Civic's Bar Rochford celebrated the Yes vote for marriage equality with this pic in front of Parliament House, with a bottle of Rainbow Juice from Gentle Folk Wine out of the Adelaide Hills.
5. Foggy Telstra Tower by @wanderlust73 (2,037 likes)
Coming in at number five, another Telstra Tower shot from Vishal Pandey (@wanderlust73), this one posted in September.
6. Telstra Tower birthday by @wanderlust73 (1,947 likes)
Given his love of capturing the Telstra Tower, it was only fitting that Vishal Pandey (@wanderlust73) posted this photo to celebrate the tower's birthday, adding: "Happy birthday young man, thanks for being a model in a lot of my images."
7. $5 note at Australian Parliament House by @alessandro_frosali (1,881 likes)
Seeing double. Alessandro Frosali (@alessandro_frosali) snapped a $5 note out the front of Parliament House in this clever November 14 post.
8. Hot air balloon ride by @nathanxgaga (1,847 likes)
Sometimes the hot air balloon isn't in the shot itself, but is instead the vessel to get the perfect shot. Nathan (@nathanxgaga) captured this view over the Commonwealth Avenue bridge.
9. Canberra Balloon Spectacular by @karleenminney (1,846 likes)
The Canberra Times' Karleen Minney (@karleenminney) captured the truly spectacular side of the Balloon Spectacular in March. "Covering the Balloon Spectacular in the wee hours of the morning is exciting enough and this year when we got 'relegated' to a craft on the back edge of the big group it turned out even better for us. Ours was inflated early and we got to watch the entire group rise to the occasion, from an angle we'd never seen before. The colours of the balloons on such a dull morning, after many days of cancellations due to bad weather made the moment even more magical."
10. Hot air balloon ride overlooking Telstra Tower by @dspeering (1,791 likes)
