The landmark date for the ACT's historic laws, latter scuttled by the High Court, has formed as a new milestone in the national capital as federal Parliament is expected to pass new national legislation on Thursday - four years later to the day.
With 20 close friends and family on the nearby footbridge, the pair promised to be each other's lawfully wedded husband and shared their first kiss as a married couple to a chorus of cheers.
Debate in federal Parliament suspended for question time at 2pm on Thursday, with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull refusing a Labor proposal to continue discussion of amendments until the legislation was passed.
Mr Turnbull said question time would instead suspend 15 minutes early to allow debate to continue.
Same-sex marriage is expected to be the law of the land before dinner.
The moment will have special resonance for the small number of couples who married in the ACT in days before the Marriage Equality Same Sex Marriage Act 2013 was overturned, after a challenge from the Abbott government.
Weddings in Canberra were allowed to proceed in the absence of any application for an injunction while the justices ponder their decision.
The High Court eventually unanimously ruled the ACT's laws were inconsistent with the Federal Marriage Act, and were therefore unconstitutional.
It said marriage laws were exclusive a matter for federal Parliament to decide, leading to years of delay and the Turnbull government's national marriage survey.
Back in 2013 Mr Player and Mr Wright shared the first marriage honour with at least one other pair, as West Australian state politician Stephen Dawson and Dennis Liddelow were married outside Parliament House at the same time.
Australia's next round of same-sex marriages are expected in early January.
