But beyond the cultural institutions, flower festivals and hot air balloons, what are those locations or "moments" that make Canberra truly special? If we went behind the scenery, what would we find?
We asked five famous Canberrans to get personal and share their favourite thing about the capital that no-one knows about.
1. Erin Molan loves a street in Canberra's south
"My favourite place in Canberra is Launceston Street in Lyons.
"My granny and grandpa used to live there. As a kid we moved around all the time because dad was in the Army. I ended up going to 16 different schools!
"We never stayed in one place longer than a couple of years so granny and pa's house was always 'home' - the one familiar place we always had.
"Turning into Launceston Street felt safe and secure and we were always surrounded by love. It was a little three-bedroom house with a big yard that we would always help pa mow and weed - and then rush inside to help granny dry the dishes. Canberra is my favourite place in the world."
2. Nick Kyrgios loves shooting hoops
"I like the vibe of Canberra - it's very relaxed, we've got great cafes and the weather is perfect.
"Obviously I grew up here when I was a young boy, and it's just home. It's comfortable for me, it's just the best.
"I used to love to spend time at the Westside basketball hoops – it's obviously being shut down now but I used to hang out there a lot.
"Nowadays, I spend a lot of time in Braddon at local cafes, that's probably my favourite spot to hang out."
3. Caroline Buchanan loves the new 'rollercoaster' at Stromlo
"I will have to be a biker and say my newest hype on two wheels in Canberra is the new Vapor trail at Stromlo Forest Park.
"It's a new addition to the park and I'm basically a little kid when it comes to riding new tracks.
"This track is a jump track, freshly groomed and flowy, like a rollercoaster from top to bottom."
4. Andrew Barr loves the new CBR T-shirts
"My best kept secret is the wide range of regional produce available at the new Canberra Region Visitors Centre.
"You can get everything from the popular CBR T-shirts and local wines to craft beers and condiments. It also has a great interactive kids area.
"Check out the centre and then stroll down to the new West Basin Park - once it's finished, of course - to take in a spectacular Canberra sunset."
5. Bill Shorten loves getting lost in stories
"My favourite thing about Canberra would have to be the war memorial.
"Earlier this year I had the deeply humbling and moving experience of cleaning the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It was an absolute privilege.
"When he opened the war memorial in 1941, John Curtin called it 'our national treasure house'. To this day, it remains Australia's best museum next to our nation's most important tribute.
"It truly represents the soul of our nation and the character of Australians.
"I encourage anyone who comes to Canberra to pay a visit to the war memorial – and don't be surprised if a couple of hours turns into a day long visit getting lost in the beautiful exhibitions and personal stories of our country's heroes."
