The 18-year-old appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday handcuffed and dressed in a blue hooded jumpsuit.

He has been charged with six offences including three of assault causing actual bodily harm, two of intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm and one of common assault.

The court heard there were five victims of the alleged attack at the ANU campus on Friday.

After his arrest on Friday the defendant underwent an initial forensic mental health assessment.

His lawyers provided evidence about his mental state and requested the case be dealt with under the Mental Health Act, Section 309.

The defendant was transported by police following the hearing to an approved health or mental health facility for more comprehensive assessment and to provide immediate clinical care.

The student is alleged to have stood up during his statistics class and moved to attack his female lecturer with a baseball bat.

The prosecution facts state the man turned his attention to students as they rushed to intervene, striking some of them around the head.

It contends police arrived just before 9.30am to the classroom where the violent struggle took place to see a large amount of blood on desks, the ground and walls. Some student's hair was wet with blood.

Five people were injured in the attack, one seriously. Four were transported to Canberra Hospital for treatment.

By Friday evening, an ACT Health spokeswoman said two of the victims had been discharged from the emergency department while two more remained in a stable condition.

The class has since been hailed for their bravery as they disarmed the teenager before security arrived to detain him.

The teenager's parents, visibly distressed, were in court on Saturday morning.

It is unknown when the case will return to court.
