Taking shape
Artist Karyn Fearnside is inviting people to become one with her art during her exhibition The Shaping. She's been exploring Instagram and she loves the way images can be quickly shared. For The Shaping, she's created masks from tissue paper and has made two sets of wings, one black and one white. Her work explores the idea that some of what we inherit lifts us up, and some does not.

So with this in mind, she invites people to take their own photos with the wings and upload them on Instagram with the hash tags #maskwingsart and #formstudioandgallery to be in the running to win one of her prints.
The Shaping is at Form Studio and Gallery until August 20.
Handle with care
Local arts organisation Craft ACT was thrilled and relieved to learn that Apparatus for the Extraction of Cloud Essence by ANU PhD student Mark Eliott has arrived safely at its new home at one of the world's leading glass museums, the Corning Museum of Glass, New York.
Craft ACT spent some months negotiating the sale of this work from the Repeated History exhibition, held in their Civic gallery earlier this year where some of Australia's top glass artists were asked to reinterpret and contemporise an object from the Corning Museum of Glass Collection.
Eliott, a Sydney-based contemporary artist working in glass, stop-motion animation and music, created a work which is both fantastically whimsical and expertly executed.
He responded to a Trick Glass from Spain (1600-1625), a complex drinking glass composed of 14 pieces and originally intended for drinking games. His response, a flameworked glass sculpture called Apparatus for the Extraction of Cloud Essence depicts a kneeling man holding a magic lamp-like object, from which is billowing a cloud shaped like a woman.
Founded in 1951, The Corning Museum of Glass is unique, in that it is dedicated to telling the story of a single material: glass. The sale by Craft ACT: Craft + Design Centre to such a prestigious institution was extremely exciting, both for the organisation and the local craft and design community. Canberra is internationally regarded for glassmaking, and this recent acquisition further cements that reputation and strengthens international links.
Evolve in time
Marsden Art Group visits the theme Evolve in their latest exhibition, reflecting a process of change whether in relation to humans, animals, the planet, weather, plants, thought or process. In their explorations of "evolve", MAG's emerging and established artists use a diversity of mediums and interpretations. The theme has provided opportunities for the artists to develop thoughts and processes, unfold stories, advance ideas and unravel histories.
This year's exhibiting artists are Ian Baird, Julie Delves, Liz Dovey, Val Gee, Margaret Gordon, Susan Hey, Penina Huho, Marilyn Hutchinson, Sally Jones, Margaret Kalms, Manuel Pfeiffer, Saggu Sukhvinder, Barbara Van Der Linden and Delene White.
Evolve is showing at Watson Arts Centre until August 13. The gallery is open 10am to 4pm Thursday to Sunday and there will be a "meet the artists" afternoon tea from 1-3pm on August 13.
Movie trivia night
Love a good trivia night and this one should be a cracker. The Canberra International Film Festival is holding a Movie Trivia Night on August 30 at the Ainslie Football Club, from 6.30pm. The festival itself runs from October 26 to November 5, at the National Film and Sound Archive and the trivia night is a fund-raising prelude. There's a light supper, great prizes and fun for all. Art sale
Local art collector Bernie Ayers is selling some of his works on August 5. Ayers says his collection is focussed on younger, mid-career artists who had already shown potential and were making their mark on both the Australian and international art scenes. He has met a number of the artists and followed their careers with interest.
The sale includes works by Reko Rennie, Jason Benjamin, Ben Quilty, Anthony Lister, Jasper Knight, Giles Alexander and Adam Cullen. For more information contact Aarwun Gallery.

A workshop at the Windsong Pavilion, Four Winds, is a great opportunity to connect with your voice, with others through singing and to learn some new songs by composer and inspirational workshop leader Paul Jarman.
