There are other Canberrans who can't find a job or a house because of their disability, Dougie Herd reckons.

Now the pair are helping the ACT government to address some of the biggest problems facing people with disabilities as part of a reference group which gives people with lived experience a voice in government.

The group will meet six times a year and provide advice to minister for disability Rachel Stephen-Smith on how to develop policies that help lift disabled Canberrans out of disadvantage.

The panel will also advise the territory government in its continued rollout of the NDIS and help them to develop a disability justice strategy.

As the chief executive of the ACT Disability, Aged and Carer Advocacy Service and mum to an NDIS participant, Ms May said there are many ways in which Canberrans with disabilities are still being unfairly treated.

"In the work we do for instance we have people whose employer is discriminating against them because of their disability or making life more difficult for them because of their disability," she said.

"We have people who've had trouble with the transport systems in Canberra and being able to access reliable transport. We have people who have difficulties with the health system, the health system isn't listening to them."

Mr Herd said the government now had a real opportunity to address some of the major problems people with disabilities faced in Canberra including transport and accessible housing.

"I think almost every family in Canberra will find somebody, a mum, a dad, a granny or a grandfather, a son or a daughter who has got some disabling condition and so the idea that people with disability are somehow different from the rest of Canberra isn't something that's supported by the evidence from people's own lives," Mr Herd said.

"I think we want to try to encourage an approach that is led by government but also comes out of the community that essentially says people with disabilities have something to contribute to the lives of Canberrans and we want to make sure they're given the opportunity to do that just like everybody else in Canberra.

"Good, bad or indifferent, we are Canberrans who've got something to offer to the city in which we live."
