When the staff of the The Canberra Times sports department found out that their seat warmer reporter Jasper Lindell had never been to a Canberra Raiders home game, even though he had grown up in the city, they knew what they had to do.

Very soon arrangements were in place to make sure he would be on his way to Canberra Stadium this Sunday for his first rugby league experience.
But Jasper won't be sent in with absolutely no idea.
We gave him a chance to ask rugby league writer David Polkinghorne any questions he had before the big game.
David Polkinghorne: Sooooo, you're going to your first Raiders game, I hear! Excited? Nervous? Worried you might become addicted to the greatest game of all?
Jasper Lindell: It's looking like it will be a real fish out of water situation. All I know is that there was a lime Canberra Milk era and Mal Meninga's political career came to a screeching halt in the studios of the ABC in 2001. And Ricky Stuart is the coach. But that's it.
DP: First, you need to start booing as soon as the Raiders get the ball and start running at those Parramatta scumbags.
JL: This does seem like a bum steer...
DP: No way. You're not booing the mighty Green Machine. You're booing the Eels for being offside and the refs for not giving us a penalty! You do this the whole game, whenever the Raiders have the ball...
You'll see.
JL: Right. So, boo when the Raiders run with the ball at Parramatta and cheer when they what?
DP: When they score a try, baby! Especially when it's "Leipana". Or John Bateman, the cult hero. Or when Josh Papalii smashes an Eel with a big hit. But loudest of all when they win.
JL: What's a "Leipana"?
DP: You don't know what a Leipana is! Oh dear! Do you know who Bradgelina is?
JL: A supercouple I was lucky enough to be young enough to not have to think about.
DP: Well, imagine them times 1000! Leipana is way more famous. They're the Green Machine's dynamic duo on the right. Every time they touch the ball expect something to happen. If they both score, then the Raiders will probably win.
JL: They sound great. But who are they?
DP: Jordan Rapana and Joey Leilua. They hunt in a two-man pack. Keep a close eye on these two, the excitement machines of the NRL....
JL: I've heard the Raiders aren't that good at winning.
DP: Mate, mate. That's the old Raiders. This is the new. They're going for their equal best start to a season since 2005. And they've got the Eels, who haven't won for almost as long 2006 to be precise.
JL: So it's two minor teams having a muck around that I'm going to see on Sunday? Why bother?
DP: Minor? It's third versus sixth. Two teams on the up. Both looking to return to the NRL finals. You've got big bopper Junior Paulo launching his 123 kilograms of prime beef into the pack he used to a part of before swapping lime green for blue and gold.
This is anything but minor.
JL: Do you reckon I should read up on the rules of the game before I go?
DP: Nah, all you need to know is every time the referees award the Eels a penalty it's wrong and every time they give one to the Raiders they've finally fixed their glasses. You could always ask someone nearby, unless they're a Parra supporter then they'll have no idea either.
JL: How important will this game be for the Raiders? Will I be witnessing history in the making?
DP: Don't get ahead of yourself, Jasper. Just take it one game at a time. But what you will witness is the Viking Clap. Now that will be special.
JL: That sounds nasty. Is that the best time to duck off for a pie or something?
DP: You should already have your pie and beer well before we get to the Clap. It's the only way to innoculate yourself against it. It happens right before kick off, as the Raiders run out onto their hallowed turf. It's a must for all NRL newbies.
JL: Is there a beginner's guide? Do I get some instructions with my ticket?
DP: Just go with the flow, man. You'll know when it's happening. Maybe get your hands above your head ready just in case. But put your beer down first.
Then let the fun begin...
