The trial of Danny Klobucar, 27, heard forensic evidence for much of Thursday, as the Crown continued to build its case against the man accused of murdering Miodrag Gajic, 71, in 2014.

Prosecutors allege Mr Klobucar beat Mr Gajic to death near the front door of his Mansfield Place unit, a couple of days after unsuccessfully trying to buy cannabis from the victim on December 30.

The accused, however, denies he was responsible for causing the death, and told a psychiatrist Mr Gajic was dead when he got there.

He is also relying on a defence of mental impairment, in the event that the jury find he was the killer.

The jury were shown photos of the crime scene on Thursday, and heard evidence from crime scene examiner.

She said she sprayed Luminol – a chemical that reacts with blood, giving a glowing effect and highlighting otherwise hard to detect traces – across the unit.

It highlighted a number of shoe prints, which were heaviest near the body, and then began to thin out as they neared couches and a coffee table in the lounge room of Mr Gajic's small unit.

In his opening to the jury last week, Crown prosecutor Mark Fernandez said it would be alleged that those shoe prints matched a shoe found in Mr Klobucar's ute.

The Luminol also helped show drag marks, which the Crown allege were created when Mr Klobucar dragged Mr Gajic back from the front door, into the hallway.

Crime scene analysis, the examiner said, also showed that the main wooden front door to the apartment was open at the time of the attack.

That's because some blood was found on a groove of the door frame, which would have been protected had the door been closed.

The security screen door appeared to have been closed, however.

The examiner also said that she could not see any apparent defensive injuries on Mr Gajic.

The court is expected to later hear from a pathologist, a blood splatter expert, and a specialist in shoe print identification.
