Tens of thousands of hectares across the ACT are being razed, grazed and burnt ahead of what is predicted to be a ferocious fire season.
On Friday, a 13-kilometre ecological burn will take place on the West Jerrabomberra Nature Reserve, near David Warren Road and Monaro Highway.
Firefighters will also conduct a one-kilometre controlled burn in bushland at the back of Araba Place in Aranda.
A seven-hectare burn at the Gossan Hill Nature Reserve in Bruce near the University of Canberra will wrap up on Thursday.
ACT Rural Fire Service's chief officer Andrew Stark said prescribed burns were one of the trade-offs to living in Australia's bush capital.
He said as well as this small number of burns in strategic urban locations, firefighters were also using chemical sprays and mowing to limit the amount of fuel on the ground.
Hazard reduction burns are undertaken in weather conditions that will minimise the effect of smoke in the area.
People in those areas who suffer from asthma, other chronic respiratory or chronic cardiac diseases should refrain from vigorous exercise and remain inside if affected by the smoke.
