Prime Minister Tony Abbott has launched an impassioned defence of his prime ministership while also admitting he could lose the nation's top political job.

In an interview with ABC News on Sunday night, hours before he faces his colleagues at 9am on Monday, Mr Abbott said he was "chastened" to face a spill motion.
"It's a pretty chastening experience to have a spill motion moved on you after just 16 months in government - a very chastening experience and I am determined that my government if it continues after tomorrow will learn from experience ," he said.
Asked if his leadership could be rolled, Mr Abbott said "it could", however he said that "the last thing we want is to see another meltdown in government".
When you roll a sitting prime minister, "you look like the Labor Party" he warned colleagues.
"Obviously I respect the party room, I absolutely respect the party room and the party room will be getting a secret ballot tomorrow, so that the result tomorrow will be something that accurately reflects views inside the party room."
"The wood will be on me to perform. It will be even more on me to perform in the future than it's been in the past."
The Prime Minister dismissed suggestions he was begging for his job and said that any minister who intended to vote against him should have resigned.
"I would expect that if a Minister was incapable of supporting the government, the Minister in question would have spoken to me and none of them have," he said.
And he dismissed suggestion he had struck a $40 billion bargain to allow an open tender for the next Australian submarine acquisition program.
"No, you would expect the Australian government to want to get the best value, you would expect the Australian government to want to get the best product and you would expect the Australian government to give Australian suppliers a fair go."
