Work on the intersections is expected to start later this year and finish by mid-2016.
It will include a slew of modifications to improve safety and traffic flow in Cowper, Badham and Antill streets.
Minister for Economic Development Andrew Barr said along with the introduction of traffic lights there would be modification to existing traffic signals and changes to kerbs, pavements and signposting.
“All of the main points in the [Dickson Group] Centre get improved,’’ Mr Barr said.
‘‘Pedestrian flows are made better and it will also assist with larger truck movements.’’
He said the work would be over two fiscal years in time for the new supermarkets.
“The redevelopment, including two new supermarkets and other speciality retailers, plus 150 apartments and 500 undercover car parking spaces, will generate additional peak traffic volumes on the local road network in coming years.
“This will also lead to greater use of public transport, bicycles and pedestrian traffic and these changes have been factored into these upgrades.’’
As part of these road upgrades, temporary traffic management plans will need to be implemented.
The ACT government is working to ensure as little disruption as possible.
Mr Barr said the upgrades were a government investment to facilitate private investment.
The intersections where work will be undertaken are Antill Street and Badham Street where traffic signals are to be installed; Antill Street and Cowper Street where there will be modifications to the existing signalised intersection; Cowper Street and Dickson Shops Access Road where minor improvements will be made; Cowper Street and Dickson Place where modification to the existing signalised intersection are proposed and Badham Street and Dickson Place where new traffic signals are to be installed.
