Hundreds are expected to compete for cash prizes in The Canberra Times' winter photo competition, which has $1000 in prizemoney on offer for the best three photos.
Photographic editor Karleen Minney, who will be part of a judging panel of senior editors, offered some practical advice for photographers of all levels.
"Dress warmly for your photographic excursion,'' Minney said.
''Warm photographers last longer and concentrate better. Layer up and remember your extremities. Thick socks, boots and beanies will keep you out there longer."
Entrants in the autumn photo competition captured a warm colour palette but now photographers will be turning their lenses to winter life in the capital, with its cool greys, whites and blues.
"Monochromatic winter images can be spectacular, but there's a fine line between that and bland winter images,'' Minney said.
''Turn that around by injecting a pop of colour or vivid subject into your dreary scene."
The competition is open, and a selection of entries will be published over the coming weeks in the newspaper and online at canberratimes.com.au.
Last year's winter winner, Debbie Hartley, snapped a picture of a frozen bubble on a frosty morning.
"The best, most interesting, winter light is easily early morning and late afternoon,'' Minney said.
''Brave the extreme weather at these times if you really want a winter wow factor."
First prize is $500, second $300, and third $200. Submissions close at 4pm on Friday, August 30.
To enter, simply send your best snaps as attached jpeg files to photocomp@canberratimes.com.au. Entries must include your name, address, phone number, photo title, a brief description and the date the photograph was taken. Photos must be a minimum of 150 kilobytes and a maximum of 1 megabyte. A maximum of three photos each person can be entered.
