A super-fine merino sheep fleece from Berridale in the heart of the Snowy River Shire has taken out the one-off honour of the President's Centenary Medal from the Royal National Capital Agricultural Society.

The award was presented by society president Rod Crompton to Jayne and Peter Lette, of the Conrayn merino stud in Berridale, at Exhibition Park in Canberra on Wednesday.

The winner was decided from among the best livestock entries to the Royal Canberra Show and the standout exhibits from the Canberra Regional Wine Show and Royal Canberra Extra Virgin Olive Oil Show.

The centenary medal was specially struck to recognise the national capital's 100th birthday and its rural heritage.

''The heritage and connection with the Royal Canberra Show and the sheep and wool industry have run very deep and close over the last 100 years,'' Mr Crompton said.

The super-fine 15.7 micron fleece was grand champion at the Canberra show, about seven kilograms of wool taken from the ewe before skirting.

The wool, the lanolin still strong, has been handled too much in the judging process to be made into anything. However, the Lettes' top-quality wool is usually exported to China and Europe to be made into men's suits and women's high-end fashion pieces.

Mrs Lette started the stud in 1991 with one ram and 100 ewes.

It now has 850 stud ewes over 335 hectares in the high country.

''We've been lucky the last few years. We've had numerous grand champions and supremes everywhere from Sydney to Canberra to Bendigo and it's real honour to win a nice award like this,'' Mr Lette said.

''People get to know when they hear about Conrayn that we're very focused on having that top-line wool with style and character.''

Royal Canberra Show steward Ben Litchfield, from Monaro Wool Services in Cooma, said the Lettes showed real commitment to their stock.

''It's a terrific attachment to the local Canberra area that we can produce something like that and it's deep in the wool corridor - Yass, Canberra, Cooma, Bombala, they're great wool areas,'' he said.

The Royal Canberra Show is one of 51 community-based projects funded through the Centenary Community Initiatives Fund.
