Todd Brendan Kirby was already on bail for serious offences when police say he committed fresh offences in the south Canberra suburb of Waramanga yesterday.
The 30-year-old unsuccessfully tried for bail in the ACT Magistrates Court earlier today. The prosecution argued the risk of Kirby committing further offences was too great.
The defendant has been charged with two burglaries, two related thefts and possessing an article with intent to use in a burglary.
The man's lawyer argued on his client's behalf that Kirby would lose his government job if he was locked up on remand and said the alleged burglar would report regularly to police.
But Kirby is awaiting sentence in the ACT Supreme Court and, under the territory's bail laws, must demonstrate special or exceptional circumstances before getting bail.
Police say neighbours spotted the accused man riding a bicycle away from one of the houses, wearing a backpack, on Tuesday afternoon.
They detained him, with the aid of another person, until police arrived.
According to the charges read in court Kirby stole electronic goods - including a laptop computer, iPod and electronic weather station - worth about $3500.
Magistrate Peter Dingwall formally refused the man bail.
Kirby is due back in court next month.
