The Kings Avenue overpass will be in lit red, white and blue stripes to welcome the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh to the National Capital and will coloured for one week starting on Wednesday, the first day of the royal visit.
National Capital Authority chief executive Gary Rake said the overpass would be illuminated in the evenings, from today to Tuesday.
''The Kings Avenue overpass was designed to act as a gateway to Canberra. This is the first time the coloured lights have been used for an official visit," Mr Rake said.
It may be the first time the lights have been used to welcome foreign dignitaries to our nations's capital but the Natuional Capital Authority said it would not be the last.
United States President Barack Obama would also receive the "royal" treatment when he visited Canberra on November 16 and 17. The same red, white and blue lights would be used but with a different pattern set for the American President.
The blue would be dropped but not the spectacle when Crown Prince Fredrik and Princess Mary visited Australia on November 19 to 25.
This would be the royal couple's first visit to Australia since 2005 and every effort would be made to ensure they were made welcome.
