Extra police had been deployed in the city and across Canberra suburbs to deal with the large numbers of revellers celebrating the new year.
Booze bans had been put in place around Garema Place and the bus interchange, and officers were targeting underage drinking, antisocial behaviour and violence.
There had been no major incidents by about 9.30pm last night.
Extra paramedics were on hand to treat those who had celebrated too hard, and were urging Canberrans to drink plenty of water, and drink responsibly to avoid a New Year's Day hangover.
In Sydney, $6.5 million worth of fireworks exploded spectacularly around the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The 7t of fireworks, which were billed as the best pyrotechnic display in the world, drew 1million people to hotspots around the harbour.
