The man, believed to be aged between 50 and 60 years, was found floating face down in the water, and was pulled from the water unconscious about 7.30am.
Lifesavers rushed to the scene, performing CPR for what they described as a "significant period of time".
Police and paramedics arrived and continued attempts to revive the man.
Those attempts failed, and the man died at the scene.
Far South Coast duty lifesaving officer Andrew Edmunds said it was still unclear how the man had gotten into trouble.
He is the second man to die at an unpatrolled beach on the South Coast in the past week. A Canberra man drowned after getting stuck in a rip at Dolphin Point near Ulladulla on Christmas Eve.
"If you swim at remote beaches, you really are putting your life at risk," Mr Edmunds said.
"It's not worth the gamble. We've had a number of major rescues in the past few days with people swimming at unpatrolled areas."
