A Canberra woman died when a car veered off of the Hume Highway and smashed into a tree yesterday.

The Holden Commodore was driving south along the highway near Yarra about 5.30pm, when, for reasons still unknown, it left the road.

The crash left a 38-year-old Pialligo woman with critical injuries. She died at the scene.
Police are not revealing her identity at this stage.
The 21-year-old male driver, who was from Fairy Meadow in NSW, suffered minor arm injuries, and was taken to Canberra Hospital, police said.
His injuries are not life threatening.
Police are still investigating the causes of the crash and are calling on witnesses to contact Goulburn Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
