The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning for "very dangerous" thunderstorms in Belconnen, Civic, Queanbeyan and Canberra Airport at 7.20pm and in Hall and Gungahlin by 7.50pm.
The thunderstorm were sighted on the weather radar at Tuggeranong, South Canberra, Weston Creek and Woden Valley earlier this evening at 6.50pm.
"The State Emergency Service advises that people should move your car undercover, keep clear of creeks and storm drains and not walk, ride a bike or drive through floodwaters," the website said.
The warning comes after similar storms lashed the south earlier today, with more than 40mm of rain recorded in three hours at Woden and Tuggeranong.
The ACT SES service responded to 45 calls in this time.
