A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Canberra and the surrounding area as heavy rain pummels the region.

Though Canberra Airport has recorded less than 6mm for the day, hail lashed the Tuggeranong and Woden suburbs for a good half hour and more than 40mm of rain has been recorded in the last three hours alone.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the storms are sweeping the state and are likely to hang around at least until the evening.
"Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones, very heavy rainfall and flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours," a warning issued at 2.21pm said.
"Locations which may be affected include Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Taree, Newcastle, Gosford, Sydney, Armidale, Orange, Canberra, Goulburn, Tamworth, Dubbo and Cobar."
The South Coast was also advised to stay alert.
A second warning is likely to be issued at 5.25pm if the thunderstorms continue at Canberra, Queanbeyan, Sydney, Newcastle or Wollongong.
