Acting ACT council chairwoman Dianne Firth met her counterpart in the national body, Carmen Lawrence, today to discuss the assessment, though neither could confirm exactly what it would encompass.
Professor Lawrence said the council had received two nominations, but the boundaries of the proposed listing were yet to be determined.
"This is really to link the city's planning history, its evolution and the development," she said.
The Australian Heritage Council is in the early stages of assessing the nominations, which aim to take the capital's natural, indigenous and historic heritage values into consideration.
Professor Lawrence said that although there are many individual places already heritage listed within the capital, the current assessment aimed to tell the story of Canberra's development in a comprehensive way.
"It's not just about the physical place, it's about the stories that link a place," she said.
