Both ACT and Monaro police will work together in a nationally coordinated traffic campaign, titled Operation Crossroads, which runs from tomorrow until January 3.
The operation will see extra police deployed on main roads and highways, targeting speeding, drink-driving, fatigue, seatbelts and driver distraction.
Double demerit points will be in place from tomorrow until January 2.
There will be a focus on Kings Highway, as crowds of Canberrans flock to Batemans Bay for the holiday season.
ACT Deputy Chief Police Officer David McLean urged drivers travelling along the highway to make sure they got to the coast safely.
''We'll be back and forth, some of us several times, over the next few weeks,'' Commander McLean said.
''We need to make all those trips well-planned trips, well-rested trips, and safe trips.''
The ACT has recorded a low number of fatalities so far this year. Just six people have been killed in crashes on ACT roads, well below the 18 deaths recorded in 2010.
Operation Crossroads was run for the first time over Easter, and the ACT managed to escape that holiday period without a single road death.
Monaro Local Area Command Superintendent Murray Johnstone urged motorists to watch out for the signs of fatigue, including sore eyes, and a loss of concentration.
''I encourage people who are going away to give themselves enough time so they can arrive at their destination safely, with the view of possibly having a break if there are signs of fatigue,'' Superintendent Johnstone said. ''Both jurisdictions will be out on the road, and if you do break the law or do anything wrong, you will be identified.
''We just want drivers to drive safely, enjoy the festive season, and return back home after their holidays.''
