A 57-year-old woman managed to stave off a robber's attempts to steal her backpack in Manuka yesterday.

Police said the woman was walking outside the Greater Union cinemas on Franklin Street about 3.15pm when she was approached from behind by a man who police believe was a teenager or aged in his early 20s.

The would-be robber allegedly grabbed her backpack and the two struggled.
The woman held onto the backpack, but the man took her mobile phone, police say.
The struggle ended when a number of passers-by came to the woman's aid.
The alleged robber fled on a bicycle down Furneaux Street and then onto Canberra Avenue.
