Aga Khan Kan was drunk and on drugs when he threatened the victim and demanded her bag as she walked to her car in November 2008.
But the young woman's screams attracted the attention of residents in a nearby apartment who ran to her aid and chased Kan away.
The ACT Supreme Court heard Kan struggled with one ''Good Samaritan'' and suffered cuts, skull fractures and a broken bone before escaping.
He was discovered when police followed the trail of blood to his Bega Court flat.
In November 2009, Kan was charged with attempted aggravated robbery using an offensive weapon and pleaded not guilty, changing his plea just six days before his trial.
Justice Hilary Penfold said Kan had been addicted to drugs at the time of the attempted robbery and had been drinking heavily and used cannabis and heroin on the day.
The court heard that since the Reid attempted robbery, Kan had committed other offences and in 2010 he was sentenced to 27 months' jail for burglary and fraud. He was paroled in October.
Justice Penfold sentenced Kan to a total of three years' jail backdated to March with a non-parole period of 17 months. Kan will serve at least eight more months in jail before he is eligible for parole in August 2012.
