His younger brother Bailey Simonsson made his name in the All Blacks Sevens program before linking up with the Canberra Raiders.
Now Liam Simonsson is walking a similar path - but his story comes with a slightly different twist.
Sure, he too has traded "the game they play in heaven" for "the greatest game of all".
But don't expect him to follow the footsteps of his father and brother into rugby league's top level any time soon.
Instead, the Woden Valley Rams centre has set his sights on claiming a Canberra Raiders Cup premiership after a stint with Royals in the Canberra rugby union competition.
The brothers are only one year apart - an age gap so small they grew up dabbling in plenty of sports together.
"I think Bailey and I both enjoyed playing sport on the weekend, so that was league, union, surf lifesaving all that kind of stuff," Simonsson said.
"When you get a bit older you've kind of got to decide which one to focus on.
"I really enjoyed playing a team sport with my mates so I stuck to playing league and union.
"So at a young age I played both league and union. And then when I started high school, around year seven or eight, I pretty much played union for the school's clubs.
"I played union from then on, from year seven to the end of school.
"Then I decided to make the jump over this year, just because I had good mates at the Rams and I thought I'd come and have a run with these guys.
"I'm happy doing what I'm doing. I just enjoy playing on the weekend with my mates."
Simonsson's younger brother Bailey made his debut for the Raiders in round one and has now scored four tries from his nine games on the wing.
"Yeah he's killing it, he's going really well. We're all really proud of how he's going," Simonsson said.
"He came over to the Raiders not really expecting much, just to trial and train but he's obviously impressed really well.
"It's all credit to the hard work he has been putting in over the last couple of years."
While his brother is forging an NRL career, the 22-year-old is busy studying at the University of Canberra and working full-time at a construction company.
Now the Rams centre will play a key role in Woden's bid to knock over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Freebody Oval on Saturday.
"We've got a few boys back from Raiders under 20s so that will add strength to the team," Simonsson said.
"We've just got to make sure we show up on the day."
