But today it's the middle of winter.
While the Shoalhaven is best known for its pristine beaches, amazing surf and national parks, it's slowly gaining a reputation as a wine destination.
Coolangatta Estate and Cupitts Winery are perhaps the best known, both received five stars in James Halliday's 2019 wine companion, but there's a growing number of wineries worth having a look at.
From Two Figs in Berry to Mountain Ridge in Coolangatta, winemakers, and wine drinkers, are discovering the potential of the region.
At Cupitts, the second generation is stepping up. Griff and Rosie Cupitt bought Washburton Farm in 2003 with the eye to running a small cattle farm. Rosie had studied oenology and decided she wanted to plant a small vineyard as well. Now, alongside their award-winning wines, there's a restaurant, brewery, fromagerie and accommodation on site. They still run some Black Angus cattle.
Sons Wally and Tom make the wine and beer. Libby, Tom's wife, has her hands over everything and is justifiably proud of the award-winning destination venue.
"The majority of the south coast wineries are all proudly family-owned and operated," she says. "You are more likely to meet the producers first-hand when visiting.
"At Cupitt's we host a daily tour and taste experience where we take you around the estate tasting wine in the wine cave usually with the winemaker, sample beer in the brewery with the brewer, visit the cheese room and kitchen garden. It is an immersive experience."
She says the area has great potential as a wine destination.
"There is some excellent wine to discover here," she says. "Also, our tourism industry is growing and wine and tourism have wonderful synergy. With its natural beauty, the south coast has always attracted tourists for outdoor activities, now as an emerging wine region, it also attracts tourists seeking out great food and wine experiences."
The Cupitt family crafts their wines from estate grown grapes along with grapes sourced from the regions of Hilltops, Tumbarumba, Orange and Canberra.
"Growing grapes on the south coast used to be more challenging with high rainfall and humidity," she says.
"The proximity to the coast is a major contributor to the unique character of our wines. The sea breeze helps to dry the moisture, but without the salt as we are far enough away from the beaches, and also plays an important role in moderating the summer temperatures giving us a relatively cool growing season. We have been fortunate to not be as affected by drought on our vineyards with all our vines dry grown."
With its natural beauty, the South Coast has always attracted tourists for outdoor activities, now as an emerging wine region, it also attracts tourists seeking out great food and wine experiences.
