Mr Taylor is under pressure over 2017 meetings with environment department officials and the office of then-environment minister Josh Frydenberg to discuss the status of critically endangered grasslands.

The meetings were held while investigations were underway into the alleged poisoning of 30 hectares that contained the grassland on a NSW property owned by Jam Land Pty Ltd.

Mr Taylor's brother Richard is one of Jam Land's directors, while their family investment company, Gufee, is a shareholder.

Labor's Senate leader Penny Wong on Wednesday flagged she would attempt to refer the issue to the Senate's environment committee, with a vote likely on Thursday.

Senator Wong's proposed inquiry would also include questions about Mr Frydenberg's knowledge and role.

The Greens back referring the issue to a committee, making the Senate cross bench crucial to getting the inquiry off the ground.

Mr Taylor insists he was representing farmers in his electorate of Hume, despite the grassland being mostly in the neighbouring seat of Eden-Monaro.

"I have no association with the compliance action that has been the subject of these questions," the minister told question time in parliament.

He said he had not made representations to federal or state officials about the illegal land-clearing investigation.

"I tell you what I have made representations about, the farmers in my electorate, because I care about them and I stand up for them," the minister said.

Eden-Monaro MP Mike Kelly said he hadn't received any concerns about the issue from constituents in his seat.

"The only concerns that have been raised with my office have been in relation to the minister's behaviour," he said.

Mr Taylor said his interest in Jam Land had been declared within parliamentary rules because the family trust was on his published register form.
